Have you ever wondered what it might be like to be temporarily blind ? Of course you have . In fact , there is a manner to fox your dead body into becoming blind , at least for a few minutes .
Writing on Mindhacks , Vaugn Bell — perhaps one of the best neuroscience writers around — explains the trick :
“ If you do n’t believe me , try this simpleton , but startling demonstration . First , hold your eyeball perfectly still . You could employ calipers to do this , or a drug that paralyse the eye muscles , but my favourite method is to apply my thumb and index finger . Using the sides of your thumb and finger , press on the off-white of the eye socket , through your upper and depleted eyelids . Do this gently . stress it with one eye first , exit the other center or covering it with your hired hand .

“ With your eye fixed in billet , keep your head still and soon you will go through the strangest thing . ( You will have to hold on reading at this decimal point . I do n’t mind . We will pick up when you have finished ) . After a few second the humans in front of you will fade away . As long as you are hold in your eyeball perfectly still , you will very quickly discover that you may see nothing at all . Blink , or move your headspring , let go of your optic and the world will come up back . ”
What ’s happening ? fundamentally , your eye is casting the exact same design of illumination on to the retina . Because nothing ’s changing , the receptors in your optic start sending messages to the brain less often , so the brain is passed data less regularly . Gradually , that means the image fades to nothing . Put inexpertly , it ’s like bad olfactory property that go away when you ’re expose to them for more than a few minutes .
Or , well , you could just close up your eyes I gauge . Anyway , you may read more about the phenomenonon Mind Hacks , which is great little neuroscience blog . Oh , and we do n’t take any obligation for you accidentally poking yourself in the optic . [ Mindhacks ]
