Oscar award winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy , who work with Danny Boyle on 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire , gave us an update on their next collaboration : translating Toby Barlow ’s lycanthrope book Sharp Teeth into cinema ! retrieve out which Hollywood firedog might make the casting swing ! Plus more news on his current project : accommodate the second Hunger Games book , Catching Fire .
While promoting his recent work Salmon Fishing in the Yemen at a roundtable , we get a niggling update on Boyle and Beaufoy ’s latest supernatural undertaking Sharp Teeth !
Are you capable to enjoy a book , when you ’re reading a record book ? Or do you see a screenplay straightaway ?
Simon Beaufoy : It ’s quite difficult to read a book now , I take to reading poetry ( because I reckon that will be alright . And it ’s not . I just started adjust an epical verse form . So that did n’t workplace , call Sharp Teeth it ’s a really fantastic novel length poem . It ’s gangland LA . Except the bunch pass to also shapeshift into dogs . It ’s all about the battalion dynamics — it ’s very mad , but really fabulous . So poetry was n’t even safe from the adjustment process .
Who are you adapting that for ?
Do n’t know yet , I ’ve been talking with Danny [ Boyle ] about it . But I ’ve got ta get the handwriting right on first .

Well I know , they ’re kind of dogs , more than wolfman .
Will it be enliven ?
Yeah probably not , that would be too easy . We have to make animation much more difficult for ourselves and practice real dogs . That would be the best , because that would be truly terrifying . I recollect spiritedness would allow too much length from it .
you may take the dog from Beginners and Uggie from The Artist ?
They ’re very good actor . But they ’re just a little piece cute . These pawl consume people . So I ’m not trusted if the little dog from The Artist would eat somebody . It could do it in a cunning way , I reckon , that would be nice .
How do you think you ’ve changed as a author in terms of screenwriting ?
I ’m sort of clearer about the journeys pic require to take … Experience really [ does that ] . I sometimes would be in love with something just because it was an astonishing novel . Twelve class of adapting way I can sort of see in front whether it can make a really good movie or not . I quite wish choosing peculiar sort of novels that appear as if they wo n’t . I would be terrified by endeavor to adapt a Dickens or a Jane Austen , which obviously would make a dandy cinema and so many are heavy novels . But I care trying to adapt the strange and quirky ones . There ’s more spare range as a writer and you could bring more of yourself in there .
How are you utilize all of that to the version of the 2nd Hunger Games book , Catching Fire ?
Oooh … that ’s more difficult , because one has to be very truehearted to a devotee base that is strict beyond anything I ’ve ever come across . And yet , you still have to do the kind of brutal procedure of turning it into a flick . Just transposing the book wholesale onto the sieve , is n’t doing nobody any favors I do n’t think . I always think faithful adapatations are a real error . That ’s not reinventing what ’s wonderful about the book onto the screen . That ’s just a slightly scared way of life go , “ We ’ll keep it the same and it will be fine ! ” And it really wo n’t because it ’s the buddy or the baby of a book , it ’s not its twin , it ’s different .
So what did you have to cut ?
Oh I do n’t be intimate yet , and anyway I could n’t possibly tell you .

An ancient race of lycanthropes pull through in New LA and its telephone number are growing as packs convert the urban center ’s downtrodden into their bend . Stuck in the middle are a local dogcatcher and the charwoman he loves , whose secret past stamping ground her as she fights a bloody one - adult female battle to save their relationship . Meanwhile , dog packs fight and schema all around the them , hide out out in old storage warehouse , city dog house cages , or the plush ease of suburban homes . Paying no heed to the moon , these packs change from man to wolf down at will , squaring off against one another as they assay dominance at any monetary value . “ Sharp Teeth ” is a novel - in - verse that intermingle heroic stem with moody humor , firedog playing cards , crystal meth labs , and human action of heartbreak and betrayal in Southern California .
