When Adventure Time premiered on Cartoon connection just over four years ago , no one could have predicted that Pendleton Ward ’s silly cartoon about a boy and his magic dog - sidekick would finally lead the public into a novel era of strange but hilarious cartoon . Most the great unwashed would have laughed at the thought in 2010 , but today , it ’s true .
Ward ’s journeying to becoming one of today ’s proficient animators commence long before Adventure Time , though , and it took him longer than most would think to get the bang show off the ground .
After graduating from the California Institute of the Arts ( which has produce more far-famed animator than you probably realize ) , Ward get his start with Frederator Studios writing short circuit for Random ! Cartoons . It was then , in 2006 , that he first made shorts for both Adventure Time and The Bravest warrior . He actually first pitch Adventure Time to Nickelodeon but they resist it . Most importantly , it was during this time that Ward met mass like Adam Muto , Niki Yang , and Casey James Basichis — all of whom eventually came to study on Adventure clip when Cartoon internet picked it up .

In 2007 Ward was hire as a storyboard creative person and writer for The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack . During this time , Ward was revolutionize by Flapjack ’s creation process , which give storyboard artists the freedom to both write and draw episodes based on an precis . He would subsequently adapt that philosophy to Adventure Time , drawing on the immense talent of his Quaker to make the show such a strike .
And if anything , that ’s what makes Ward and Adventure Time so great — both have uplift everyone affect to gravid heights . Not only has the entire cast and gang become synonymous with cartoons of the high quality , but many members have gone off to create their own amazing projects .
That ’s how Rebecca Sugar ’s wonderful Steven Universe got its commencement . After spending a few years as a storyboard artist , author , and composer for Adventure Time , Sugar ’s show became Cartoon web Studios ’ first serial publication to be created by a woman .

And then there ’s Natasha Allegri , who worked as a persona designer and storyboard revisionist . She ’s the one who gave us all the awesome gender - swapped versions of the Adventure Time cast , and she also wrote and illustrate the comic Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake Issue 1 . That ’s all nifty stuff , but what ’s really amazing is her new animated cartoon Bee and Puppycat , which you could see onCartoon Hangover ’s YouTube groove . It ’s still in its infancy , but it ’s shaping up to be another wonderfully uncanny cartoon that we ’ll all lessen in love life with .
The popularity of Ward ’s innovation has also served as a gateway for many other cartoons of a similar type . Though Regular Show come first and was create by Ward ’s admirer J. G. Quintel , it really benefited from Adventure Time ’s popularity .
Many might not have get around to watch if they were n’t already tuned in for Adventure Time ( not that the Regular Show is n’t successful in its own right field , because it is ) . And shows like Uncle Grandpa , which even out - weirds Adventure Time on occasion , might have break , like its predecessor Secret Mountain Fort Awesome .

And it ’s clear that Ward ’s Adventure Time was n’t a fluke , as the Bravest Warriors is just as good . To remember that a YouTube series could be so well done might be hard for traditional sketch - spectator to eat up , but it ’s true(and you should look out it all if you have n’t ) .
Fred Seibert , owner of Frederator Studios , in all probability indirectly frame up it best in aYouTube interview about the first time he met Ward . He had just finish verbalise about how they flex Adventure Time down the first time when Seibert tell the following .
“ At the sentence I was in my mid ’ 50s , and I ’d been making cartoons for 15 years . And like every other retard executive director , I thought I knew what made a good sketch , and this ( Adventure Time ) did not fit it , on the open … his drawings look mirthful — like funny unearthly — compare to all the other cartoon . We had already introduced , you know , 15 long time before , a new trend of toon with Dexter ’s Laboratory , Cow and Chicken , and The Powerpuff Girls . In my mind , those were cartoons . We had to introduce this whole raw generation of talent and I was just sort of riding the wave . ”

In the same way that Dexter ’s Laboratory and the Powerpuff Girls introduced a new style of cartoons 15 years ago , Ward and his contemporaries have usher in a new era today . It ’s a fine coincidence that Ward got his starting at the same studio that blend things up last meter , but it ’s his work in world-wide that is a will to the necessity of frequent change in the animation manufacture . gratefully , the minds behind Adventure Time seem to understand that .
15 years ago , Adventure Time might have been too eldritch to survive on TV , but now the world has wholeheartedly embraced its uncanny magic spell . And in doing so , dozens of other vitaliser now have the exemption to create the quirky toon they require while drawing in the kind of audiences connection administrator love to see .
And though it ’s unimaginable and wrong to heap all the thanks onto Ward , he did bring a significant office . But the important thing to remember is Ward never did it alone , and he carry on to focus his own gift and the endowment of his friends toward making the salutary cartoons of this multiplication .
