Nokia’snew Lumia 1020comes with a legion of features you might not be used to on a humble smartphone . And one of the most challenging is the Lumia ’s revolutionary new approach to zoom . Here ’s how it work .

Because the Lumia 1020 shoots so many pixels on the 41MP sensor , it does n’t have to lose any existent “ pixels ” when it zooms in . It can go to 6x zoom by just cropping down on the original persona taken ( sort of like how the D4 ’s 1080p crop mode works ) .
The path to think of it is that the full , unzoomed image actually throw out a bunch of data point . You know how Apple ’s retina method sends four pixels to populate what used to be one pixel ? The PureView detector , more or less , does the same affair , so it ’s send that “ retina ” package to a non - retina sieve . But that datum ’s all there , and so you’re able to “ zoom ” in and get at the data that would have been lost otherwise . The 1020 saves the “ oversampled , ” little image ( which has fall behind some data ) , but also preserve the full file so you could zoom all around the ikon and zoom wherever you want later on .
Here ’s a quick look at how that “ dual - seizure ” method — the 5MP oversampled persona and the full file — breaks down in action :

What ’s it all run to mean for your photos ? More control condition , mostly . A chance to frame your shot just right after you ’ve already taken it , without lose all the important sharpness and detail that you want . It ’s a handy excogitation , and one that might just gain you over to Windows Phone once and for all .
