The brief answer to your question ? I slept fine !

There is really no specific training that astronaut receive with regard to sleeping and sleeping conditions . As a topic of fact , the best advice I got for sleep was from my STS-117 Shuttle Commander C.J. “ Rick ” Sturckow . He told me to bring a adept volume and do n’t make any noise !

For those of you seek more insight , my personal experience with catch some Z’s in space was “ dreamy . ” No , I did n’t dream differently in space , but I did woolgather about stuff , just like I do here on Earth . I was part of a particular experimentation called “ SLEEP Long ” which required me to wear a special watch for the entire 152 day growth ( and many days before I fell and after I shoot down ) .

The experiment ( and the watch ) appraise light / dark and motion ; furnish the investigators with key information about when I was sleeping and to what tier . Post - flight data point revealed that I averaged about 7 60 minutes and 20 minutes of sleep over the 152 day mission – much more than I think I am getting on Earth . The ticker data point could distinguish them when I was unsatisfied , when I was in deep ( REM ) sleep … pretty cool .

My sleep post on ISS , the TeSS ( Temporary Sleep Station ) is no longer there . But it was a forerunner to the sleep stations now on board the ISS in the US Segment ( Node 2 ) . The TeSS was quiet , glowering and cold … I liked it cold ! We had Russian - made sleeping bags that just needed to be tied at four corners somewhere — and in any direction — to keep us from floating around during our sleep full point .

The bags were lightweight and just warm enough — I log Z’s clad only in a duet of pugilist shorts . Many spaceman found it too inhuman on ISS and slept in an assortment of long johns , pajamas and even stocking caps !

My nighttime procedure consisted of never having a reckoner in my sleep station . patently I was a forward thinker for those learned person today who tell us to keep our electronic devices out of our beds ! I did all my work outside in the lab , then reverse off the Lab lights before entering my “ bedroom ( teeth brush , potty break taken , etc . ) . ” I doff all of my clothes , except shorts , then climbed into my sleeping bag , head to the roof ( best position as the cold A / C vent-hole would then swash my exhaled CO2 aside from my face … a key consideration for log Z’s orientation ) . I set froth earplugs in both ears and then take Clive Cussler ’s “ Sahara ” until my eyelids get drooping .

singular thing . When your eyes get droopy in distance and just take up to close up , your body relaxes and your manpower release the record . But without gravity , your head does n’t strike and then “ jerked meat ” back up when you realize you ’ve dozed off . If you do awaken , your book is still floating there , right where you left it !

I never really took snooze while on ISS . If I sense myself starting to drift , while work at the computer for example , I would go get something to drink or eat up in hopes of raising my energy horizontal surface . I did not need to slumber during the day for reverence of NOT being capable to sleep at Nox . It seemed to be an in force scheme for me .
