My adult job with Grimmhas always been how formulaic it is . But the first-class “ Red Menace ” managed toshake thing up without really shaking things up , and is my fresh voter turnout for bestepisode of the time of year .
Let me explain . In another humans , this could have been aneasy Wesen - o’-the - hebdomad installment . Wesen shows up in the inhuman outdoors , doessomething unearthly , someone dies . Nick and Hank show up and Wu line exactlywhat the spectator interpret in the cold outdoors , in detail , although not everything so thatNick and Hank have stuff to do to eventually catch up . Nick and Hank arebaffled until a second victim appears and they finally trust a Wesen might beresponsible . They confab with Munroe and/or Rosalee , there ’s some padding , Nickfights the Wesen , the end .
But “ Red Menace ” starts with Nick , doing his honorable BarryAllen impression in the park , but not sudate thanks to his novel undead Grimmpowers . It ’s a lowly , simple change , but it sets the whole step for the rest of thisunique instalment . Then the Wesen appears — but he ’s heal someone . The Russians ( there ’s a crowing Russian population inPortland in world , so good on Grimmfor convey some of the metropolis ’s personality to the show ) have a bragging - ass partyto keep their therapist Boris , Boris flirts with the untested ladiesostentatiously in front of his wife , and when he heads to the bathroom a waitertries to kill him . Except Boris grabs the fop and throws him out the windowinstead .
Nick and Hank are called to the scene … because a body hasbeen found . But not the dude ’s ! It ’s the server the dude killed and stuffed inthe deep freezer so he could get close-fitting enough to attempt to assassinate Boris ! Thanks tothe eating house ’s eerily comprehensive certificate footage , Nick et . al recognise thedude killed the server , put on his uniform , and then attacked Boris . So theinitial murder — which did n’t even hap onscreen — and was really a humankilled by another human — is solved instantly .
But the PPB are rum about Boris tossing a gallant who triedto murder him out a window , and then now returning to the party likenothing bechance . Nick , Hank and Renard ( who speaks Russian , because Renard isboss ) find Boris , and Nick see the healer ’s magical healing power in actionand the gullible glow they emit ( no one else can ) . Nick tells Renard , and Renardinstantly get laid it ’s a Koschei . Wesen solved ! No 10 min of playing “ Guessthe Wesen ” with Munroe ! Now , Nick still ask to do enquiry , so he and Munroehead to the poke , but since Grimmhas gotten the Wesen out of the way so quickly , we can really get some Grimmhistory — specifically that Rasputin was a Koschei , and the British governmentcoincidentally hired a Grimm to assassinate the brainsick Thelonious Sphere Monk ( why the Britishordered Rasputin ’s destruction is best impart a whodunit ) . But this is boundlessly coolerand more play than Grimm ’s normal m.o . , which is taking five minutes for Munroeto find and then list the characteristics of a Wesen that we , the audience , have already seen for ourselves .
Only now does themysterious Wesen - induce slaying victim come out ! As it wrench out , the Koschei can harmpeople as well as cure them , and by harm I intend “ pump full of horrible radiation syndrome . ”They find the faux - server - turn - assassinator dandy in a hotel tub , basicallylooking like a pestilence victim ( flock of pus - filled boils . The yellow tingedbathwater he ’s been soaking in is a nice / ugly touch ) . But then this guy pops up and hugs Hank!He ’s not even bushed ! So the gallant gets transport to the hospital while Nick , Hank andWu take a mathematical group cascade and get decontaminate . It ’s a weird but completelywelcome non - sequitur , and give this episode even more personality .
Again , instead of slowly reveal clew about what’sgoing , Renard calls a buddy in Russia and figures out the deal — Boris the Koscheiused to be a free lance assassinator who killed a pot of people , and thus likely hada band of opposition . When questioned , Boris says he ’s become a healer to make upfor his yesteryear , although he still jazz he ’s blend to perdition — it ’s the firstWesen - o’-the - week I opine I ’ve ever see that ’s not paint as completely salutary orevil . Since every time Boris heals someone he hurts himself , and is near deathanyways , he ’s assume all of this .
The plague dude had a phone on him with one figure on it;Hank call it only to find it ’s split . “ await like his spouse is n’t anidiot , ” Hank harbinger , and I swan to god I almost cheered . When plague dudeawakes , he whispers something about a “ her ” to Renard , who deduces ( deduces ! ) that the dude ’s accomplice is verypossibly in the house with Boris .
Indeed she is , and , despite the show attempt to make youthink that Boris ’ wife Olga wants her married man dead ( see below ) it ’s really thesexy Russian amah he ’s been get laid on the side . See , this is the baby of thewaiter / assassin dude , and Boris pour down their dad back in the daytime . With herbrother beat , she has nothing to turn a loss , so she poison a bottleful of vodka , makesBoris drink all of it , and then freaks out when he does n’t croak ( Koschei canheal themselves , make them difficult to kill , a la Rasputin ) . This is whenNick and Renard burst in .
Boris is poison , the Russian maid is freaked , Nick andRenard wave their hired gun about confusedly , and Boris ’ married woman Olga pops and in turnsinto what is basically a cavalry sword - toothed Panthera tigris Wesen ( called a Malin Fatal ) andtears the maid ’s throat out . But Boris , poisoned , fawn to her and expend thelast of his lifeforce to bring around the aphrodisiacal maid . Maybe he ’ll go to heaven afterall .
See , this episode was n’t flashy , it did n’t have a net ton ofmythology , but by changing up the immeasurably overdrive formula , this isdefinitely my best-loved instalment of the time of year . I do n’t know who was willing toshake Grimm out of its normal routineor why , but it was most welcome , sir or madam .
Assorted reflection :
One more affair : There was a group B - story , involving Juliette … that look like it ’s hold up to be the mainplot of next week ’s episode . I ca n’t narrate you how excited I am about this . Grimm almost exclusively cling to 1)single episode stories or 2 ) stories that stretch over one-half or an entireseason , so this thing about Juliette ’s protagonist Ali — who is a Wesen , because ofcourse she is — endure away from her abusive hubby is a small enough part ofthis sequence that I ’ll actually be kind of interesting if it becomes the majorstory next week . It ’s unsubdivided but effective ! Admittedly , watching Juliette kickthe shit out of the opprobrious husband / Wesen in the “ On next week ’s episode ” clipdidn’t injury .
There was still some bullshit that did n’t really weigh : Hankhitting on his physical therapist Zuri ; Renard last confronting Adalind inAustria and state the same undefined / prodigious shit about the Royal Family and“shifting allegiances ” he always does .
Seriously , at one stop Renard is in reality live toexplain what the fuck is take place with the royal family , what they ’re tryingto do , what these fealty are actually all about , and how Adalind ’s half(or quarter)-royal infant will cypher into all this diddly-squat specifically , and Grimm will like a shot become doubly asgood .
So was anyone else confused about the plague guy callingsomeone to say he betray to kill Boris , and then the hard cut to Boris ’ wifeOlga ? Was this an actual feint on Grimm’spart ? Because there are literally no clue that suggest Olga is n’t part of theplot until the show terminate and she just is n’t .
Renard take the maid ’s gush throat was ridiculous . “I do n’t think she ’s going to make it ! ” he hollo , as five gallon of blood sprayfrom her neck - hole like a garden hose fastening .
