Google is bringing Nest back into the fold . Nest , known for it ’s silklike thermostats and user - well-disposed security cameras , was assume by Alphabet ( then anticipate Google ) for $ 3.2 billion in 2014 . Since then the fellowship has maturate , grant toGeekwireit has more than quadrupled its staff , and it ’s rolled out a wide-cut range of products , including cameras , an alarm system , and a overbold doorbell . Now the company , which Nest chief operating officer Marwan Fawaz claims has transport over 11 million devices to date , is being brought back into Google , and that mean Google is about to get a lot more internal with your home .

Google , like a very persistent animal in winter , want inside your star sign . The reason products like Android goggle box and Google Home exist is because Google wants to be there , absorbing your banal New World chat about your favorite gondola and that unexampled osseous tissue broth your coworker ’s been drinking .

That ’s why many raise their eyebrow when Google declare it was acquire Nest to start with . At the meter , Nest laminitis and Chief Product Officer Matt Rogerswrote in an FAQthat Nest ’s privacy policy “ clear limits the purpose of client information to provide and meliorate Nest ’s products and servicing . ”

Since then we ’ve grown much more well-fixed with Google chilling out beside us on the sofa , to the point that in a 40 minute interview with Fawaz , CNETapparently never talked about security fear once . Instead the conversation was focused on more practical things — like whether Nest devices will persist in to work with Amazon product ( they will ) and how the novel agreement will help oneself Nest product . Fawaz tell CNET that Nest has used Google ’s AI know - how in the past and that “ being part of the Google family , we get close to that . ”

This is exciting news if you ’re really into a full , Google - engender chic home ecosystem , but it ’s also a little terrifying ! In one grand leap Google is going from just having microphones all over your sign to making the cameras that can hold up inside and outside your home . That common sense of surveillance will no doubt be further aided by other products , likethe Smart Displayswith built - in webcam being made by Lenovo , Sony , LG , and JBL .

Regardless of the privacy concerns , this is a very crowing quite a little for Google , which is trying to get more serious about its ironware biz . I’ve been unimpressed with the attempt thus far , but this latest tidings shows some substantial commitment to a broad and well defined Google computer hardware environs .
