After 10 years , Futurama fans are back to gettinga impudent weekly dosethanks to Hulu ’s revivalofMatt Groening ’s exalt sci - fi series . To learn more about what ’s break down on behind the scenes , io9 get a chance to deport an email consultation with Futurama manufacturer Claudia Katz , who ’s been with the show from the very beginning andthroughout its many iteration .
Cheryl Eddy , io9 : What do you conceive it is about Futurama as a series that defecate it so resilient and able to manifest all of these comebacks ?
Claudia Katz : Much like The Simpsons , Futurama is a show about a family with great social and political commentary . The family in Futurama is more focus on “ the family you make , ” and the sci - fi premiss allow for us to take a fun look at how much or how little has changed in 1,000 years . finally , I think the resilience of the show is a combination of great characters , storytelling , wittiness , and heart . The looker of the sci - fi nature of the show also allows for almost unbounded stories to tell on earth and straight-out worlds to travel to . Having awesome fans also helps .

io9 : You ’ve been with Futurama since 1999 . How did you issue forth to be involved with the show , what is your day - to - day role like as a producer , and what ’s been the most rewarding thing about being part of Futurama for all these years ?
Katz : Matt [ Groening ] approached Rich Moore , Gregg Vanzo , and me in 1998 . Rich and Gregg both work on other Simpsons , and I had been operate with Matt since 1991 in some way or another . Once thing started to move forward , we faced some initial hurdles from the studio apartment , but we were able to convey our vision of the show to Matt and he really fought for Rough Draft [ Studios ] .
To me , my role is the perfect crossing of fine art and commerce . It ’s my job to set up a product methodology where the work party can be successful ; that still work within the confines of the schedule and budget . I also have a lot of creative input which I love , but no one wants me draw anything ! Futurama is well craft in every style ; peachy composition , a great voice cast , and animation and visual storytelling that hopefully live up to the fabric we are hand to work with . Having been a part of every installment is a privilege . And , having oppose so hard upfront to get the show , make it even more heartfelt .

io9 : Do you have a personal favourite instalment or plot line ( and why ) ?
Katz : Well , that ’s like picking a favorite tike , but there are always some episodes each time of year that I am specially doting of . I love the funny and elegant way Matt , David , and the writer figured out how to contribute the show back in “ The Impossible Stream . ” The Momazon episode , “ Related to Items You ’ve Viewed ” is a unfeigned comedic and visual spell de force . I also really really love the “ cult Against the Vaccine , ” and “ Zapp Gets Cancelled . ” And , our time of year conclusion is one of the best ever ! I tell you I could n’t really choose .
io9 : How has work with Hulu been unlike from your previous experiences with Futurama ’s various homes over the year ?

Katz : Both 20th and Hulu are fantastical partners . Marci Proietto at 20th was a vast driver in bring in the serial back and the whole squad at Hulu really gets the show and is fabulously supportive . The marketing and launch of the fresh episodes is incredibly thoughtful and inspiring , and continues to this day .
io9 : Has shifting to streaming changed the scope of the show at all ?
Katz : I consider these two seasons of episodes we ’ve produced are in all likelihood the openhanded in range so far , at least on average . proceed to streaming has also been a heavy positivist for both the writers and Rough Draft . We ’re incline about two minutes longer which is really liberating for storytelling and give some of the more sensational visuals a little more sentence when needed .

Katz : I consider Matt , David , and the writers do a great job of pinpoint the tincture of the show and rewarding longstanding fans by bringing back character from prior seasons as inthe comeback of the wormsfrom “ Parasites Lost ” in “ Parasites regain . ” However , you would n’t need to have seen the original insect episode to delight the unexampled one . io9 : How ’s the chemical reaction to the new season been so far ?
Katz : So far it feel like people are really enjoying the new episodes . I think we ’re making our original fans happy , while gaining a whole new hearing .
io9 : A raft of the sequence have been very focused on stories that finger like comment targeting 2023 ( including the retort of Futurama itself , but also the advent of cyclosis , bitcoin , the pandemic , Dune , etc . ) Why was that something the show want to foreground in the raw episodes , and is that something we ’ll continue to see in the rest of the time of year ?
Katz : I guess that eccentric of commentary has always been a crowing part of Futurama . In our 10 - class absence seizure , there is a LOT of earth to cover . You ’ll see a trivial more of that this season , but there are also episodes that depart from that . Those are great too .
