After David Mitchell ’s brilliant Cloud Atlas admit science fable in its genre mash - up , we were sad to learn his new script was straight - up litfic . But turns out it ’s the first intensity of a trilogy … that will deform very scientific discipline fictional .
Mitchell was in New York to promote his unexampled novel , The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet , and someone asked about the novel ’s villain , an abbott who it ’s hinted has been alive for 600 twelvemonth . And Mitchell shocked the crowd by sharing news he had n’t even distinguish his publishing company yet : Thousand Autumns will be followed by two more novels , which will deal with the subject of immortality . And these two volumes will jeopardize much further into the region of wondering fiction , and will be much closer to the experimental dash of Mitchell ’s early work .
Asked to comment , a Random House spokesperson told Capital New York : “ We have no prescribed scuttlebutt about David ’s architectural plan for his upcoming novel . He plainly likes dropping hints at readings . ” Anyway , fingers cross ! It go like a bully approximation for a trilogy , and I have a soft spotlight for book series that start up out more or less naturalistic and then venture into skill fabrication , ever since I down Doris Lessing ’s tike Of Violencenovelsall in one go .
