Friday ’s Caprica sequence , “ spectre In The automobile , ” focused entirely on the twisted things that human race will do for their cyber - girl – and to them . It was in all probability the most disturbing episode yet . And those phantasmagoric videogame sequences were completely insane .
This episode did something that most TV SF does mischievously : It went deeply into the psychological science of two main character , Joseph Adama and Daniel Graystone , and even used the holodeck - corresponding properties of V - World to do it . Though there were a few over - the - top moments , the episode managed to offer a compelling and torturing coup d’oeil into the mind of our anti - sub . Yes : anti - poor boy is all they will ever be after this instalment .
First , the Graystone action . Last workweek , Daniel finally connected the dot and earn that Zoe is most likely still lie in wait inside his one working cylon model . So he decides , in full psycho fashion , to make her show herself by psychologically torturing her . At first he begs and pleads for her to show herself . But when she refuses , he force her automatonlike side to execute statement while he tell her extremely creepy write up about her childhood traumas – such as the time when she was trapped in a burn household and almost did n’t live . Then he reenact that trauma by occupy her out of doors , dousing the ground around her with gasoline , and lighting it on fire . And all the while , he ’s telling Zoe that she ’s always been a scared little miss and that she basically did n’t hold up up to his first moment of her .
At that point , you may tell Zoe is reciting that Sylvia Plath poem in her head , the one that go , “ Daddy , Daddy , you bastard , I ’m through . ” She is pretty much ready to hit Daniel , and as she confesses subsequently to Lacy , she almost does when Daniel require her to shoot her fluffy firedog . Daniel ’s idea is that if she ’s pure cylon she will kill the pawl unquestioningly ; but if she ’s Zoe she wo n’t be capable to . Luckily Zoe ’s cyber - senses tell apart her that the gun is n’t stretch , so she pip the dog without killing him . ( Why Daniel does n’t realize his cylon has been program to sense minute differences in weight between loaded and unloaded guns is beyond me . )
So basically Daniel has reveal that Zoe has good understanding to hate him . He knows precisely what her impuissance and fears are , and decides that the best way to get a reaction out of her is to use them against her . What form of father does that ? The sort who think cyber - slaves make an awesome business good example .
While Daniel busily tortures his girl , Joseph operate the other manner and torment himself to get his girl . He ’s gravel profoundly into New Cap City , the V - World combining weight of Grand Theft Auto , and his novel usher has introduced him to a meth - like drug you could take while in V - World that allows the game to bypass safety controls and send bursts of pleasure and hyperfocused speediness straight into your brain . The V - World deoxyephedrine is awesome , and there ’s a great gunfight when Joseph tracks his daughter Tamara ’s lead back to the New Cap City translation of their apartment .
We initiate to realize that Tamara has create a home for herself in New Cap City , as the superpowered “ dead girl ” who leaves her flowery “ T ” mark on wall and awes audience at nightclubs with her uncanny ability to stay on animated after being derezzed . Everybody has heard rumor of the “ all in missy , ” but Joseph ca n’t find her anywhere .
And that ’s when things go all surreal and spangly , like you just walk into a seventies movie by the famous Italian film director Fellini . Joseph follows Tamara ’s lead to a cabaret where the cast of the Rocky Horror Picture Show seems to have merged with the cast of Behind the Green Door . Everybody is ready fun of Joseph , who confusedly keeps calling Tamara ’s name . Eventually he shoots some drug into his eye and murders everybody , and then one of the spangly night club people evidence him that Tamara was there of late but now is go again .
Though I could have done with less of the spangly , I absolutely loved a scene where Joseph leaves V - World and get advice from his brother Sam about kill people . Joseph is having a hard time derezzing player in New Cap City – he just freezes when he needs to take . So he postulate Sam what he thinks about in parliamentary procedure to murder people . At first Sam is micturate off at the question , but then he earn that Joseph might have good reason to need that information . “ You pretend it is n’t real , ” Sam says . “ You pretend the people are targets and that you ’re in a game . ” I love the placid , well - played irony in this scene , with the mobster who belt down hoi polloi in real spirit helping a gentleman to kill people in a plot by remind him that there is a sparse line between how it feel to pour down in existent life versus in a videogame .
This is what I get it on about Caprica , and why I hope it gets regenerate after this Friday ’s season finale . This is a series that always bring home the bacon thoughtful scenes that are entirely without cliches , hebdomad after week . Sure it can be odd – what show is n’t ? – but I ’m always glad I tuned in .
