Chucky will be back for more shambles and wisecracks — a second time of year of the hitSYFY and USA web horror seriesstarringthe slayer dollfrom theChild ’s Playmovies wasannounced this week . The close of time of year one just aired , so there wo n’t be new episodes for awhile , but that did n’t bar us from hop on the phone with Chucky creatorDon Mancinito memorise more .
What follows is a lightly edited and condensed version of our conversation .
Cheryl Eddy , io9 : When did you obtain out you were getting a season two , and did that affect the ending of season one at all ?

Don Mancini : Just a duad of weeks ago — right around the time it was announced — is when we cognize . I had learned from working with Bryan Fuller on Hannibal and Nick Antosca on Channel Zero that you need to construct something that is going to be satisfying as its own entity , in the event you do n’t get another time of year — but at the same time , could run as something where you ’re plant the seeds for season two . Ideally you want to do both simultaneously . So that was our goal . That ’s all . We want it to work both ways just in case , because you ca n’t take anything for grant .
io9 : What ’s next for Chucky ? Will we be seeingGlenda or Glenor any other lover - favorite characters ? I guess what I ’m asking is , what can you reveal about season two ?
Mancini : I ’m working on the hand for installment one at the moment . But you make out , there is a [ narrative ] bible , and I just pitched the season to the studio apartment and the web , and I call back we ’re all excited about where we ’re going . But I ca n’t say too much about it other than to stay tuned — and a lot of the reference that fans love and would wish to see again , you just might see them .

io9 : Will the characters that were newfangled in Chucky ( and managed to hold out the time of year ) be a part of season two ?
Mancini : That ’s also a matter of about which I ’ve been instructed to say … stay tuned for ! I intend , it ’s television receiver . We want to have fun with it . We need people to foretell and wonder and spokesperson what they want . That ’s part of the fun of the storytelling mental process with the audience , and that ’s one of the thing I hump about TV as controvert to moving-picture show where it ’s kind of happening in real sentence . You have this dialogue going on with the hearing and the fans , and I really bask that . It ’s really fun . But this is part of it : that sort of suspense and anticipation of marvel what ’s going to come through .
io9 : Speaking of the fans , what form of feedback did you get from Chucky fans about time of year one , and what is your relationship like with them ?

Mancini : Well , you know , I listen and I monitor stuff . One of the thing that I need to do with the serial was impart the tone of the whole thing back into something that was near to tike ’s bid 2 , because I know that ’s essentially everyone ’s best-loved moving picture of the franchise . And I get that — I love that moving picture , too . So I need to do that , and related to that , we try on to make [ Chucky ’s look ] identical to [ his look in ] Child ’s Play 2 because I knew that ’s what the fans wanted . So I listen to all of this , and I think about it , and I take it into account . But at the same time , part of the sport of it is subverting those arithmetic mean . It ’s not just about , like , give everyone what they need — of path , that would n’t even be potential — but I ’m just always interested to hear what they like and characters that they like and what they wish about those character , because I ’m a fan of it , too . I ’m a fan of other cultural artifacts as well . And so I know how it works ; it ’s fun to take part in .
io9 : Have you gotten any reaction from Hackensack , New Jersey , where the show assume place ?
Mancini : really , I have n’t ! But I ’m super interested because I wonder , you know ? perhaps they ’re just too busy . Maybe they ’re unmindful . I experience like at some item over the last eight weeks as the show was airing , I did Google Hackensack just to see , but I did n’t make out across anything . I recall the Hackensack that we depict is kind of interesting — and , of trend , it ’s a Hackensack of the mind . No relationship whatsoever to the real Hackensack , New Jersey other than its , you have a go at it , strong-arm position and its very existence .

io9 : It ’s much a quality in season one .
Mancini : Hackensack for me , I established that in Bride of Chucky because I needed a place for the case to go — they needed to have a destination for their route trip . And I wish the word “ Hackensack ” because it just phonetically sounds like a position where a serial killer would be from , because it ’s drudge and sack — it just sound violent . It vocalise like stabbing ! But beyond that , I was a immense fan of Richard Donner ’s Superman , where of course Eve Teschmacher ’s mother is from Hackensack [ Laughs ] . When Lex Luthor post the two missile flying , one of them is going to the San Andreas fault , and Superman can only hold on one . And then the other one ’s run to Hackensack , New Jersey and Miss Teschmacher says , “ But Lex , my mother subsist in Hackensack ! ” and he glance at his watch and then just shakes his foreland and walk away . That ’s why it ’s Hackensack ! [ Laughs ]
io9 : What do you think Chucky , the fictitious character and horror icon , bring to the board in 2021 that ’s unique ?
Mancini : I suppose that over the twelvemonth with the picture show we ’ve done , we ’ve witness that we can plug him into different subgenres and different note and now even different mass medium , and he can solve . He ’s a very versatile theatrical role , and I imagine he ’s evolved that mode . I mean , part of it , hopefully , was just writing . You know , sort of calculated preparation . But he has evolve in such a way that it was part because I just wanted to keep myself amuse and entertained as a author . And so when I was writing the different film , I just wanted to reinvent it so as not to do the same matter over and over again . But I think that that has really help us .
So to suffice your question , I think that Chucky has this versatility as a character and that allows us to punch him into unlike kinds of metaphoric subtext . Because you always need that ; it has to be about something . The goliath ask to be a metaphor for something . When we get out in the ‘ 80s with the first tike ’s Play , Chucky was a metaphor for consumerism run amok , say . But in this first time of year of the idiot box serial , we used Chucky as a metaphor for intimidation , which is a really potent issue in the zeitgeist , particularly as it have-to doe with to teenagers , knowing that [ teen were ] going to be our our main reference . It ’s of import have that , and to set a stake in the undercoat so that everything , no matter how nonsensical it all gets , it remains frozen in some sort of reality . Beyond that , with this one specifically , I wanted it to have some veridical - sprightliness , 14 - year - old angst and annoyance . I think that ’s one of the reason people care it — and that ’s something that I knew that the telecasting data format would provide an chance [ for ] , to work up in some real meat . I think we ’re all — all the writers and directors and producer — we’re all super happy that that seems to have land . People really seem to like these characters and the adventures they endure on and the emotional arcs that they experienced .
io9 : The tone of the show is unique because you balance gore with some very camp humor . But then there ’s also those aroused moment , as you mention .
Mancini : Yeah . I suppose it ’s just like , the different colour go well together . The unlike flavor go well together . For me , I ’m always doing that with the picture show , too — mix more grounded , realistic stuff and nonsense with the encampment that unavoidably do from Tiffany and Jennifer Tilly . Finding the balance between horror and realism and comedy and stylisation on the other two ending of the spectrum , that ’s very interesting to me .
Chucky ’s first time of year is now stream on Peacock ; Chucky season two will hit SYFY and USA internet sometime in 2022 .
