If you ’ve ever want to watch a horror movie that also feels like a warm clinch , you shouldseek out line Relatives . Writer , director , and starNoah Segan(Looper , Knives Out ) plays a lamia named Francis who consider he ’s the coolest cat ever . He wears a leather crown , drive an old muscle gondola , cross America , and once in a while murders hoi polloi by blow the blood out of their bodies .
That all changes , though , when Jane comes into his life . Jane ( Victoria Moroles ) is a 15 - year - honest-to-god girl whose very human mother died lately and may have slept with a vampire about , say , 15 days and nine month ago . The fact she hunger raw nitty-gritty and has to wear out a fortune of sunblock are also clue that Francis is her male parent . The realization that his cool - guy living as an immortal vampire might be changing radically is at first scary to Francis , but finally he embraces it , and that ’s when thing get really interesting .
With bloodline Relatives , Segan is exporing — in the most fun , genre - forward-moving way potential — how a person change when they become a parent . Not just their living , but who they are . Francis is the ultimate forever child . He literally does n’t rise up , so has never felt like he has to maturate emotionally . But his years and years ( and years ) of life experience also make him a uniquely capable pa . Not that he wants to come in to term with that .

But he does , and the way the film balance lamia essential like murder and staying out of the sun with life necessities ( school , money ) is both cunning and lovely . The script has some play workarounds and compromise that even the most diehard vampire fans wo n’t see coming . And it all process because Moroles and Segan have such great chemical science . There ’s credible tautness and compassion between them as one might expect of a father and his disaffected adolescent girl .
All the while , the vampire hooey slowly becomes less and less of import , with a few shocking and surprising exceptions . rather , what becomes more cautiously crucial to the theatrical role and film is Francis ’ history . We get jot of where he grow up , how he became a lamia , and the Judaic culture he still carries with him . Francis does n’t seem like the eccentric to regularly practise his religion , but it ’s a huge part of his casual being – and the choice , along with its execution , humanizes the fictional character in a very endearing , enriching way . It ’s one of many specific , good decision Segan makes throughout that makes his moving-picture show feel like just the right balance of its many genre .
The one downside to Segan performing so many roles , many of which he ’s doing for the first prison term in a feature film , is that Blood Relatives is n’t flashy . For the most part it ’s a very issue of fact , down the middle trend of filmmaking focalise more on eccentric and story . So while it might not rise off the screen at you , it but has to gain you over with its humans . Which it does . Turns out , taking a ordinarily crimson genre and stuff a dissection of parentage and lifetime experience into it is a lovely way to make a decided , memorable pic .
