RIM excels at many things , but keeping secrets ai n’t one of ’em , so we ’d eyeballed the BlackBerry Curve 8900 ( nee Javelin ) quite a bite before this AT&T - branded one dropped in our laps . It ’s aBolder versionof the current Curve that improves it in basically every way : light , tighter , but more powerful — and it feel like a phone that was produced in 2008 , not when you were still keeping your 2006 resolve .

It ’s a solid phylogeny of the Curve form factor . somewhat slender , it ’s also squiffy , with less macerate blank space around the screen and keystone . The line are much cleaner , ready it sleeker and more modern , like a fun car compare to a Toyota Corolla . ( It ’s very similarto the Storm . ) The refined form has some function , too , since it feels better in your handwriting . It also has the Storm ’s dedicated lock key fruit on the ceiling — no more menu - digging !

Screen
Even though the curvature is RIM ’s mass market smarty ( the Pearldoesn’t really count ) , they did n’t skimp on the screen compared to the Bold . It ’s fantastic . Colors pop , contrast is peachy , resolution is solid and the viewing angle is skillful and wide . For nitpickers , he colors are perceptibly warmer than the Bold — kind of like the iPhone 3 G vs. the iPhone — but it ’s whole fine .

Keyboard and Trackball
The keyboard feels almost exactly the same as the former Curve — punchiness and layout are essentially indistinguishable , though the keys now incline ever so slightly , like the Bold , but to a lesser grade . Most people probably wo n’t even notice . The new “ atomic trackball ” does n’t feel too unlike compared to the one you ’re used to , just more robust and less hangin ’ promiscuous .
Battery Life
We have n’t done any formal tests — it’d be unfair since this is n’t a final anatomy and the software optimizations can make it even adept — but it seems to be comparable to the old Curve ( i.e. , well over a day ) , even with the beefier hardware .
OS and Software
Again , this is n’t a net building block , so really digging into the atomic number 8 and software like it ’s a output model is n’t quite sightly , but so far , it ’s a really unchanging version of the BlackBerry 4.6 OS we’veseen on the Boldand Pearl Flip . And plainly , that ’s where a lot of the improvement is over the sure-enough Curve . It ’s prettier , smoother , and just a respectable overall substance abuser experience , with major enhancement in the look and feel of the entire BlackBerry experience .
The Curve 8900 is fairly nimble getting around the OS , though not quite as zippy as the Bold — but that ’s expected since the Bold has more monstrous hardware powering it . you’re able to kinda see this in the web browser , which incarcerate behind the Bold in our tests even though both were on Wi - Fi . There will probably be tuneups in the final build to make it snappier , though the Bold will always have a ironware vantage .
Conclusion
What ’s interesting is that even though the Curve 8900 borrows intemperately from the Bold in full term of design and in no manner feels cheap ( well the charge card - y chrome is a small trashy ) , it ’s more clearly secern from it than the old Curve was from the 8800 . It ’s very much a Curve still , and intelligibly the consumer model to the Bold ’s pro position . So what attend to be a toilsome pick from leak shots , is n’t quite as difficult as it come out .
The Bold is more substantial , exuding “ executive ” to the Curve 8900 ’s “ middle manager ” or “ normal person . ” It ’s clearly more powerful , and has a bigger screen . The keyboard are way dissimilar , too — in person , I prefer the Bold ’s orotund , squishier headstone to the Curve ’s smaller , crocked ones . But plainly , the big thing is 3G. The Bold has it , the Curve 8900 does n’t , and we missed it sorely .
All that said , this thing will deal like a mother , and justifiably so . It push the BlackBerry you see in most the great unwashed ’s script ( if they ’re channel a BlackBerry ) into 2008 , go past the original breaking ball in every way .
