We know all about Iron Man . We know all about Captain America , Thor , Hulk , and even a turn aboutHawkeye . But until now , that fifth institution member of the Avengers , Black Widow , has remained mostly a enigma — until next calendar month . That ’s when , after being introduced to fans 11 years ago , Natasha Romanoff ( Scarlett Johansson ) will at last get her Marvel Studios origin story . Only it ’s not exactly an root story , plus , she ’s already dead in the currentMCU timeline .
Black Widow open up in theater of operations on July 9 and it tell a story that takes place between the events inCaptain America : Civil WarandAvengers : Infinity War . At the end of Civil War , Natasha was on the run , track down by her own government for disobeying the Sokovia Accords . The next time we see her , she had a new haircut , a new mental attitude , and was on a crash track withdestiny in the form of Thanos . Now , the chronicle of Black Widow will turn to Natasha ’s past tense , her family , and so much more — fundamentally any inquiry you have about her will credibly be answered along with many unexampled revelations . The person in rush of delving into those deepness wasdirector Cate Shortland . io9 spoke with her about the nicety of separate a story in this specific window , and a few of the things that make Black Widow unique to the MCU . ( The next audience has been blue-pencil and condensed for clarity . )
Germain Lussier , io9 : So , obviously , we see Natasha die inAvengers : Endgame . know that , why is it important to tell her tale now at this point in the MCU ?

Cate Shortland : I think fan deserve this moving picture . I believe the character deserve this movie and I guess people really want to see more of her . I imagine that was the message that Marvel had after she get out the universe was “ Noooo ! ” So I feel really lucky that I was part of the carnival .
io9 : I really savor the moving picture , but I call back my favourite affair isFlorence Pugh ’s functioning as Yelena . It ’s just so bully . She fall off as kind of aloof and innocent at times , even though she ’s a total badass . What were your conversation with her like regarding that type ? How did that develop ?
Shortland : We knew she had to be a free spirit and she had to be really different to Natasha . So Eric [ Pearson ] , who is the screenwriter , has put a mountain of himself into that character . He ’s really cockamamy and politically incorrect and he ’s fresh and he ’s put a wad of himself in her . And I think it ’s really a great mixture , this kind of goofy male inside this female caput . You know ? It ’s quite peculiar . And then you ’ve get down all of Florence ’s stuff where she ’s improvise . And then I was also bring stuff especially when she ’s really raw . That would often be Florence and I.

io9 : The other thing I loved is [ slew underage coddler about Red Guardian , wreak byDavid Harbour ] . How did that modernize ?
Shortland : Again , I opine that ’s Eric , the film writer , he had all this beautiful sort of human fallibility stuff that he would just put into the characters . And I call up that ’s what makes them really endear , is they ’re so flawed and so rummy . And , yeah , it ’s beautiful watch these kind of broken - down superheroes .
io9 : What about the picture when he , Natasha , and Yelena reunite ? look out it , it seems like there was probably a hatful of laugh while filming that .

Shortland : You lie with what ? We germinate that so fast because we were losing light .
io9 : Oh , wow . Okay .
Shortland : So we were run . But initially , I consider the first part , yeah we were laugh a flock , but we express mirth all the time on that circle . We had a passel of fun .

io9 : [ Cut spoiler interrogation about the film ’s post - credit scene ] .
Shortland : I ’m really glad you enjoy that . But we ’re just pass to keep that for the fans so they can love that themselves .
io9 : Okay , no problem , so we ’ll toss that . That ’s the end of the movie and this is the beginning of the movie ; I do n’t recollect the last time a Marvel film had opening credit . Tell me about that decision .

Shortland : We want to represent out more of what had happened to the Black Widows and the Widow programme . So we created more of a framework so that multitude could , in a very short amount of time , get what the widow woman programme is .
io9 : I think what ’s nerveless aboutthe film being on Disney+is people will be able-bodied to go through it frame by form unlike in the theater . Are there Easter Eggs the great unwashed should look for in that succession ?
Shortland : Yeah , there are . There are some really great little scenes in that title succession that come back later .

io9 : Excellent . I call back the other challenge with this movie is we make out Natasha . We do n’t know these new characters , but we do know Natasha . So what step did you have to take to make her moral force , but also agree into what we ’ve seen before and what we know we ’re going to see after ?
Shortland : We sleep with where she was coming from . We screw she was kind of broken and kind of alone and we knew that she was going into this heroic engagement towards the closing . So it was like our film is starting off as nothing . She ’s broken , she ’s raw and she has to go through this journey where she kind of self interrogates because otherwise , what you ’re getting in Endgame is a character that ’s not fully realized when she makes that choice . And what we wanted to do was say this is why she could make that pick , because she completely roll in the hay who she is and she ’s come to terms with it .
io9 : Yeah , utterly . Now , as far as I be intimate and read , this film was almost done if not done when the pandemic smash . So what has been the operose part of waiting to bring out the motion picture ?

Shortland : You know what ? To tell you the the true , it has n’t been unmanageable . What ’s been unmanageable for me is , I felt for the journalists and the magazines that kept putting us in those magazines . But when you looked at footage of what was happening across the world , I ’m not being a martyr , I ’m just state what happened to us was nothing .
io9 : Of course . Now last thing is we already love Natasha and , through this movie , we ’ll fall in dear with these novel character too . I take over we ’ll see more of them in the future , hopefully , so are there any in particular that you sense a connexion to and that you ’d love to help craft their journey ?
Shortland : I recall all of them were great . I think … I ca n’t say because it ’s like opt a favourite fry . So I ’m going to zip it .

Black Widow open up in dramatics , and on Disney+ with Premier Access , July 9 .
