Jörg M. Colberg , an completed astrophysicist and photographer , created a serial publication of images entitled “ American Pixels ” in which he applied a ego - made compression algorithm to photographs , turning them into artwork of the digital age .
But Colberg ’s full treatment are n’t just commentary on the state of images in an eld of lossy file cabinet types . He design his own compression algorithm that responds unambiguously to the contents of each pic .
For Colberg , the compression becomes part of the creative onward motion . Heexplains :

A computer that creates a jpeg does not know anything about the contents of the ikon : It does what it is told , in a uniform style across the image .
My idea was to create a variant that followed in the pace of what jpegs do , but to have the final result reckon on the original prototype … adaptative compression ( acomp ) is a unexampled image algorithm where the focus is not on making its concretion efficient but , rather , on making its outcome interesting … As computer technology has develop to make artificial image attend ever more real – so that the late multiplication of triggerman and war game will await as realistic as possible – acomp is intended to go the opposite way : Instead of creating an range of a function artificially with the intent of make it look as photograph - naturalistic as possible , it involve an image captured from life sentence and transforms it into something that await real and not real at the same prison term .
The American Pixel renders are intended for hanging on walls , allowing the viewer to take the unlike layers of pixelated item by move nigher and farther away from the work .
