The death toll was high for the bumblebees , and is think to exceed 25,000 – a number that could symbolise a loss of more than 150 colony . That estimate comes from Rich Hatfield , a conservation biologist with the Portland - based Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation , who went to investigate following several reports of bushed and moribund bees carpet the parking portion .
“ They were literally fall out of the trees , ” said Hatfield , in reference to the European linden tree under which the bee were found to be cluster . “ To our cognition this is one of the large document bumblebee deaths in the westerly U.S. It was heartrending to watch . ”

The Xerces Society immediately contacted the Oregon Department of Agriculture ( ODA ) , which launched an investigation into the expiry of the bees . It has since come to light that the linden trees were spray Saturday with an insecticide called“Safari”(marketed by Valent as “ the quickest broad spectrum insecticide on the market ” ) that may have been improperly applied .
“ They made a Brobdingnagian fault , but regrettably this is not that uncommon , ” tell Xerces Executive Director Scott Hoffman Black inan interview with Oregon Public Broadcasting . “ plainly they did n’t follow the recording label educational activity . This should not have been applied to the trees while they ’re in blossom . ”
